Welcome Back!!

Below you will find a useful overview of the activities and topics that will be covered during the Autumn Term. Our theme for the term is based upon the book What's Under the Bed? By Mick Manning.

Language Literacy and Communication
•Listening to a range of theme related storeis
• Jolly phonics/Jolly Grammar 1- recognising sounds, using capital letters, common and proper nouns
• Sequencing stories, jumbled sentences, missing words.
• Read and spell high frequency words
• Cvc words- spelling, reading, and writing.
• Handwriting – letter formation in soil, sand, plasma screen
• Re-telling theme related stories (stories from other cultures / familiar settings)
• Listen to Poems – Make lists of rhyming words, shared writing.
• Writing lists - objects found underground, electrical appliances around the home
• Read, follow and write instructions for practical activities.
• Recounts of events, trips, weekend news

Mathematical Development
• Abacus work books and practical activities
• Counting up to 100- forwards, backwards, in multiples of 1 and 10.
• Reading numbers to 20 in figures.
• Recognising and understanding value of teen numbers.
• Doubling
• Less than / more than
• 2D shape recognition and shape pictures. Sort and label 2D shapes using computer word bank.
• Comparing lengths and heights of classroom objects.
• Shop role play- using till and money, coin recognition
• Days of the week, months and seasons.
• Number formation in soil, paint, sand etc
• Various computer games/ internet sites to support weekly learning objectives

Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity
• Setting targets- celebrate achievement; think about what they can improve.
• Contributing to Class rules
• Learning to identify and deal with feelings in a positive way
• Circle time activities/games - Identifying and respecting similarities and differences between people
• Friendship – what makes a good friend?
• Play and work cooperatively – variety of board games, talking partner activities, Working together on the computer etc.

Physical Development
• Games- throwing and catching for height, distance and accuracy using bean bags, balls etc.
• Target games- skittles
• Gymnastics - perform short movement sequences
• Changes in direction and control over large body parts
• Using tuff cam to evaluate own performance.
• Putting out/away apparatus carefully.
• Fine motor- drawing, chalking, painting, cutting, and modelling.
• Construction –building models (houses, buildings etc.)
• Controlling computer mouse and plasma screen

Welsh Language Development
• Greetings- ydw I, bore da, prynhawn da, pwy wyt ti?
• Numbers- counting
• Colours- songs e.g un, dau, tri banana.
• Sut wyt ti? – Asking someone how you feel.
• What is the matter- Beth sy’n bod?
• Flash cards to introduce new vocabulary/ incidental welsh phrases each week
• Additional theme related vocab fruit and vegetables etc.

Creative Development
• Self portraits
• Still life drawings -plants and autumn objects
• Fruit/Vegetable prints
• Making dinosaur/ theme related puppets
• Exploring clay, making marks and models
• Christmas cards/ decorations
• Music - identify different sources of sound
• Make sounds using body,instruments and computer progs.
• Select sounds to reflect the mood of the songs and recognise long and short sounds.
• Make long and short sounds using instruments
• Dance - Responding to music/ story stimulus – Bear hunt etc
• Linking 2/3 contrasting actions.
• Explore different pathways.
• Perform in pairs using mirroring technique.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World
• Electricity –Identify objects that use electricity in the home and school
• Water - Explore the water cycle. What do we use water for?
• Soil/clay – What is soil/ clay? Find out about animals that live underground.

• Create a wormery
• Autumn – sequence of seasons, animals that hibernate. Go on an autumn woodland walk
• Tunnels- how are they made? Look at examples of tunnels familiar to the children
• Make maps, plans and routes of an imaginary underground world
• Dinosaurs – Make fossils. Become historians. Explore the history of dinosaurs. Where did they live? What did they eat? Etc Internet research
• Mining – History of mining in Wales. Learn about life of a miner from the past

Religous Education
• Celebrate religious festivals-
• Harvest, Divali, and Christmas
Discus symbols, artefacts and food.
