Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We have been discussing animals that live underground. Last week our sand tray was filled with soil and we looked closely at worms.

Mrs Phillips showed us how to make a wormery. She told us we needed to build up layers which the worms would mix together.

First we put some soil into the tank.

Then we added some worms.

Next we added a layer of sand.

We spread it evenly across the tank.

We added some compost...

Then more sand...

Then some more soil...

We could see the layers building up.

We continued adding the layers of soil, sand and compost.

When our wormery was finished we covered it with black cardboard to make it dark as the worms don't like the light. We added a flap allowing us to look at the worms mixing up the layers.
