Longer and shorter - measuring fun

We enjoyed investigating the autumn objects we collected on our walk. First we sorted them into longer and shorter than the golden stick.

Then we ordered the carrots and green beans from longest to shortest.

After that we went outside and found objects taller and shorter than the stick.  We measured them using bricks and recorded our results in a table.

Model making

After deciding which feature of Pontyclun we were going to make and then designing it, we set about creating it.

Innovate!

This fortnight we are in the innovate stage of out topic 'Community Explorers'.  The children were given the opportunity to use their knowledge of the locality to help them create a large scale relief map.
First they worked with their talking partner to design an area of the map, thinking about the features they thought should be included.

They then decided upon 1 feature to design and make.  The children were encouraged to choose their own materials and label their design.

Autumn Walk

We set off from school on our 'autumn walk'.  We passed the library and lots of different houses.

We tried to cross the bridge into the woods but it was closed.  We looked at the map which showed us a different route.

On our way we saw blackberries.

Look at the fabulous colour of these leaves!

We crossed the road taking care that no cars were coming.

We finally arrived at the woods.  We climbed up the hill and followed the pathway through the trees.

Then we crossed the bridge over the river.

We saw lots of autumn leaves on the ground. We collected some to take back to school.

We looked up into the trees and saw some leaves that were falling.

We took a short cut around the football pitch to get back to school.

When we got back to school we used the leaves to do some printing to make a fabulous autumn colours display.
