Welcome to Year 1

Welcome back after the long summer break.

Our topic this term is Marvellous Me. Below you will find a basic overview of what your child will be covering this term. This blog will enable you keep up to date on what your child has been doing in Year 1, so don't forget to check in regularly.

Mathematical Development

• Counting up to 100- forwards, backwards, in multiples of 1 and 10.
• Reading numbers to 20 in figures.
• Recognising and understanding value of teen numbers.
• Doubling
• Less than / more than
• 2D shape recognition and shape pictures.
• Comparing lengths of classroom objects, heights of each other
• Shop role play- using till and money, coin recognition
• Days of the week, months and seasons, birthdays
• Number formation in soil, paint, sand etc


Language, Literacy and Communication Skills

• Listening to a range of theme related stories and poems
• Jolly phonics/Jolly Grammar 1- recognising sounds, using capital letters, cvc words common and proper nouns
• Writing lists - birthday presents, party food, friends, family
• Read, follow and write instructions for practical activities.
• Listen to and re-tell stories from familiar settings – Author Jill Murphy
• Re-enact stories through role play and use of puppets.
• Read and spell high frequency words.
• Handwriting – letter formation
• Writing name and address


Personal and Social Development, Well being and Cultural Diversity

• Setting targets, achievement; think about what they can improve.
• Contributing to Class rules
• Identify and deal with feelings in a positive way
• Circle time activities/games - Identifying and respecting similarities and differences between people
• SEAL - Getting on and Falling out
• Friendship – what makes a good friend

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

• Listening to a range of theme related stories and poems
• Discuss family and pets – create basic family tree
• The body – learn names and uses of body parts and find out about some organs and how they work. Internet research
• Identify similarities, differences e.g. hair/eye colour and height
• Senses – games, sorting objects, describing using senses
• Sound- identify sources and how we hear
• Learn about locality - address, maps of locality
• Identify different types of homes and buildings
• Recognise changes in locality over time using a range of resources to different types of homes
• Victorian Christmas – identify similarities and differences

Religious Education

Celebrate religious festivals-
• Harvest, Diwali, Christmas


Physical Development

• Games- throwing and catching for height, distance and accuracy using bean bags, balls , skittles and targets etc.
• Gymnastics - perform short movement sequences including frog hopping, foxes, bunnies, happy cat and angry acts. Introduce the 8 basic shapes.
• Changes in direction and control over large body parts
• Recognise how breathing changes during exercise and how they look and feel.
• Putting / getting apparatus away carefully.
• Fine motor- drawing, chalking, painting, cutting, and modelling.
• Construction –building models


Welsh Language Development

• Greetings- ydw I, bore da, prynhawn da, pwy wyt ti?
• Numbers- counting
• Sut wyt ti? – Asking someone how you feel. – daily well being
• What is the matter- Beth sy’n bod? . Parts of the Body
• Hospital role play
• Family/pets
• Where do you live?
• Likes/dislikes
• Flash cards to introduce new vocabulary/ incidental welsh phrases each week


Creative Development

• Self-portraits in the style of an artist (Picasso)– pencils, pastels
• Looking at the work of a Welsh artist – Cefyn Burgess
• Rangoli patterns, batik art - Diwali
• Christmas cards/ decorations
• Victorian Christmas decorations
• Music - identify different sources of sound
• Make sounds using body and instruments
• Select sounds to reflect the mood of the songs and recognise long and short sounds.
• Make long and short sounds using instruments –create a sequence.
• Dance - Responding to music/ story stimulus
• Linking 2/3 contrasting actions.
• Explore different pathways.
• Perform in pairs using mirroring technique.
