Creative Development - Music

 We have been learning about pitch in music.  We listened to music and tried to identify if the pitch was going up, down or staying the same.  Then we had a go at playing the xylophone.  We listened carefully to the notes being played to hear the difference in pitch.

As a treat the children got to listen to a band perform in our own school hall. It was a fabulous experience enjoyed by all!

 Harvey was the lucky one chosen to play the drums! Wow he was great!

Physical Development - Ball skills

This fortnight we practised the skill of rolling. We worked with a partner and thought carefully about the direction and speed of the ball to make it easy for our partner to stop the ball and return it.  Then we enjoyed some team games to practise the skills we had learnt.  We are hoping for nice weather now to practise what we have learnt in a much bigger outdoor space!

Mathematical Development - Number Bonds

The children have been working hard both at home and in class to learn and remember number bonds to 8.

Froggy Number Bonds - We matched the number sentences on frogs to the correct lily pad number

We played with 6, 7 and 8 skittles, rolled a ball then wrote our own number sentences to match.

We each had 8 chocolate buttons on the plate and had to find 9 different ways of separating them into 2 groups.  We wrote the number sentences to match.  When we found all 9 ways we got to eat the chocolate. Yummy!!!

Creative Development - Valentines Day!

In preparation for Valentines day the children designed and created their own valentines card and made yummy heart biscuits.

Langauge, Literacy and Communication

This fortnight we have been reading 'The Elves and the Shoemaker' as part of our work on Traditional Tales.  The children have enjoyed sequencing pictures from the story and re-telling it in groups.  They have also created speech bubbles with what the characters might be saying.

We know that every story needs a beginning, middle and end.  In groups we divided up the story into beginning, middle and end.  Each pair took part of the story to re-tell then we were able to put it together to create a group book.

We have talked a lot about the books we like reading and why and have enjoyed sharing them with others.  Here are just a few of our favourite books.

Knowledge and Understanding of the world - Shadows

We found out that the biggest source of light is the sun and we went outside to investigate shadows.  The children enjoyed drawing around each others shadows.

 The children were amazed at how much bigger their shadows were than them!

The children experimented with creating shapes and seeing if they could 'catch' their partners shadow!

Following all our work on Shadows the children created a shadow theatre and puppets from the story 'The Elves and The Shoemaker'.  They enjoyed re-telling the story to the class.
