Language, literacy and communication - pirate fun

This term we have used the children's interest in pirates to help develop all skills across the curriculum.  The children enjoyed a treasure hunt, where the treasure they searched for were letters and words that fitted together to tell them more about the life of pirates.  They worked with a partner, talking through the problems and helping each other to read each clue.

Within the year 1 area the children are enjoying the Pirate ship, Pirate shop and small world toys.  These areas give the children the opportunity to role play the life of a pirate, drawing on what they have learnt.

The children have, with support, reserached famous pirates and what life was like for pirates in the past.  They have enjoyed writing the facts they have learnt.  They have also created their own pirate character profiles and will be using these chracters to write their own fantasy story.
