The Ducklings Arrive!

In Science this term we have been learning about ourselves and other living things. We were lucky enough to get some duck eggs from a local farm, and have been keeping watch over them in an incubator for the last few weeks. Finally, on Thursday night, they started to hatch out, and by 3am on Friday 27th November we had 4 beautiful fluffy ducklings (as well as a sleepless night for Miss Spackman and her mum!)

Even though we didn't get to see them hatch, we looked at photos and videos of their arrival. The ducklings didn't look so cute when they first hatched out!

But after an hour they had dried out and fluffed up. By the time they'd got to school the next day they were much more alert - we all wanted to have a hold! Awwwww....

We examined the egg shells that the ducklings had come out of - and couldn't believe they had fitted inside the day before!

We made a water drinker using a pop bottle, just big enough for the ducks to get their heads into (although later that day one managed to get inside, so we had to evaluate and improve our design!)

News spread and pretty quickly our class was full of visitors all wanting to see the new arrivals. Even Mr Roberts couldn't resist a cuddle!

Miss Spackman has taken the ducklings home for the weekend, but will be bringing them in next week so we can watch them grow. They are already getting bigger and more playful, and have been enjoying spending time with Miss Spackman's dog Honey!
